The meeting this week will be held on Thursday Feb 9, 8pm, in Ross 302.  Attend the meeting if you are interested in being involved in the planning of Act! Speak! Build! Week that will be held April 1-7, 2012.

Rake-a-thon Info

For those of you new to the organization, this should help you to understand Rake-a-thon, and the roll of the coalition in the fundraiser.  To start off, rake-a-thon is our annual fall fundraiser, which helps us fund builds and events for the year, as well as provide donations for Habitat.   We begin in late October/early November by canvasing Chestnut Hill (a neighborhood nearby) and signing up residents who would like us to rake their lawns at a future date.  This is a combined effort with UPenn and Temple, because it is such a long event it is great to have the efforts of all 3 schools.  This year, UPenn is in charge of the logistics of the event, but we are all participating equally.  All the days we will be flyering/raking are up on the signup page and we need a ton of volunteers.

This weekend is the last weekend of flyering,.  Drexel is responsible for Saturday, and Sunday we will have the help of Temple.  This is an awesome opportunity to get involved, meet other students and take a walk.  Also, this event qualifies as service hours if you are in need of completing them for your freshman Univ. 101 class or a frat/sorority, etc.

First Meeting Minutes!

Greetings everyone!

Habitat for Humanity had its first meeting of the quarter this past Thursday. Welcome to all our new members, it was great to see so many new faces!

Next General Body Meeting: If you missed the meeting, don’t worry! We will be holding another General Body Meeting (GBM) next Thursday, October 15th at 9pm in GSDC Conference Room D (basement of Creese Student Center), but I’ll also outline some important upcoming events in this email. Our next GBM will hopefully feature an actual Habitat Homeowner, so be sure to come out!

Fundraising: This term we will be canning (collecting money from pedestrians) almost every other week. The first canning date is this Friday, October 9th from 4-6 pm at 30th St. Station. This is a great opportunity to fulfill your volunteer requirement for the chapter as well as for the university. If you are interested in participating in canning make sure you sign up on the website at http://signup.duhabitat.org.

Builds: Our first build for the school year will be this Saturday from approximately 7am-4pm. In order to be eligible for a build, you must have attended one fundraising or volunteer event — canning counts! If you have a car, and are willing to drive, it would be greatly appreciated! If you are interested in attending the build sign up on the website at http://signup.duhabitat.org; more information and directions will be provided to those who sign up.

Hoodies: We have also decided to hold a competition for the design of our 2009 Habi-Hoodie’s! The winner will get a free hoodie with their design on it! Designs must use only a single color ink and must include our name or chapter logo. Submissions are due by our next meeting, Thursday October 15th, in any form.

Executive Board Meeting: An executive board meeting will be held tonight, October 8th at 9pm in our office 3014 McAlister. Board meetings are open to any student, but are generally smaller than General Body Meetings, and are more focused on running the organization. If you’re not sure if you want to attend, I’d suggest waiting to come to the following week’s GBM.

Future Events: More information will be coming soon regarding November’s annual fundraiser, “Rake-A-Thon” and open board positions for the 2010 Executive Board.

Salem County Build

We went to Salem today to help out at a Habitat house. We were laying cinder blocks to help create a wall that will eventually be part of the basement and it’ll be the support for the front porch. It was a great experience, we learned how to make the cement that is used to hold the cinder blocks in place and by the end we had become pretty good at laying the cinder blocks. We were also cleaning the floor of the home. Here are some pictures of us at work.

Paul at Habitat Salem says:

“On Saturday the Drexel Habitat group came down and spent the day continuing to lay block and mix mortar. They were quick learners and worked very well as a team, much conversation and comradery was evident as the front supporting wall was laid down with excellent height control, using the transit and string line as if they were old hat for them.”

Build May 30th

We have another build day on May 30th, in Salem. The sign-up can be found at signup.duhabitat.org. We will be leaving Drexel around 7:45 and returning by 3 pm. Please keep in mind the need to do an event prior to the build (for new members) but the upcoming canning or Downtown Party will work :-)  Logistical details will be emailed at a later date.  Space is limited to 10-12 students.

Downtown Party at Sakeya – April 30th

Drexel Habitat will be hosting a Downtown Party (cooler, more fun name to follow) with UPenn and Temple at Sakeya (1420 Locust St) on April 30th from 10 pm to about 2 am. There will be an awesome DJ and of course all proceeds go directly to Habitat for Humanity. 18 to enter/21 to drink. There will be some $3 drink specials, so tell your friends and plan for a fun Thursday night! Tickets will be sold in advance for $8 and at the door for $10. More details to follow closer to the actual date.

BUILD DATE: This Saturday April 18th

We have a build in Salem County this Saturday, April 18th. If you are interested in coming on this build and you are able to drive please contact me asap at kb353@drexel.edu. A signup will be created momentarily at signup.duhabitat.org.   A max of 7 people can come, so it will be on a first come, first serve basis, though we do need 1-2 drivers.   Feel free to email with any questions.  Logistical details to follow, though plan to meet around 7:30-8am on Drexel’s campus, and arrive back around 3pm.

Additional Canning Date Friday April 10

Along with the Thursday canning event on April 9 we will be taking a second group canning the next day, Friday April 10.  The time will be from 4-6 pm and the location will be at the Comcast center.
 
If you cannot make the Thursday canning event and can make the Friday one, please sign up at signup.duhabitat.org. The event name is entitled Canning (Friday).  If you do not sign up we may leave without you. :-(.
 
Please wear your green Habitat shirts or habitat hoodies and meet in the Habitat office Macalister 3014 prior to the event.
