Next GBM - Tuesday 1/26 9:00 PM

Our next GBM will be held this Tuesday in the usual place (conf. room D, Creese). We have a limited agenda this week, so its a great meeting to come to if you have ideas you would like to share or questions you want answered. Since it is getting towards midterms, we will try to keep it short and sweet.

Rake-a-thon 09: Best year yet!

Just a quick thanks for a great term. Our 5th annual rake-a-thon was a huge success this year. All together the coalition made over $6,000 for habitat. To all those who participated - great job!

Look for news in the beginning of the Winter term for our new meeting time, and place and of course info about the next big event: Shack-a-thon!

Rake-a-thon: Final Weekend

This coming weekend (Dec. 5/6th) is the final weekend for our fall Rake-a-thon fundraiser. This event helps us fund builds and trips such as ASB for the rest of the school year. This coming weekend we have a total of 19 homes to rake, and therefore need all the help we can possibly get. If you are not a member, no problem, participating in this event makes you eligable for future builds, and also qualifies as service hours for Civic Engagement. Snacks will be provided throughout the day, and logistical details (such as time and meeting place) can be found on our signup website (signup.duhabitat.org). Questions can be directed by email to contact@duhabitat.org

I hope to see many of you out there! Both days should be a great time to socialize with Penn and Temple students as well as help Habitat towards it’s goals.

Board Meeting & Collecting Board Applications

Hi All,

Thursday (11/19) we will be having our last meeting of the month.  It happens to be a board meeting, which will be held in 3014 McAlister at 9 PM.  All are welcome!  This is the deadline for submitting board applications.

We will be discussing details for Shack-a-thon, so if that sounds like something you would like to help plan, come out and give your input.  Also, rake-a-thon continues, and we’ll be going over logistics for the rest of that event, as well as our ASB trip to Alabama!

For those in the know, my favorite cupcakes will be provided :-)

Board Meeting

There will be a board meeting this Thursday, Nov. 5th, at 9 PM in 3014 McAlister hall (which is our office). All are welcome, but it would be a good idea to attend if you are planning on running for a board position in the upcoming elections.

Rake-a-thon Info

raking_leaves3
For those of you new to the organization, this should help you to understand Rake-a-thon, and the roll of the coalition in the fundraiser.  To start off, rake-a-thon is our annual fall fundraiser, which helps us fund builds and events for the year, as well as provide donations for Habitat.   We begin in late October/early November by canvasing Chestnut Hill (a neighborhood nearby) and signing up residents who would like us to rake their lawns at a future date.  This is a combined effort with UPenn and Temple, because it is such a long event it is great to have the efforts of all 3 schools.  This year, UPenn is in charge of the logistics of the event, but we are all participating equally.  All the days we will be flyering/raking are up on the signup page and we need a ton of volunteers.

This weekend is the last weekend of flyering,.  Drexel is responsible for Saturday, and Sunday we will have the help of Temple.  This is an awesome opportunity to get involved, meet other students and take a walk.  Also, this event qualifies as service hours if you are in need of completing them for your freshman Univ. 101 class or a frat/sorority, etc.

If there are any further questions, feel free to send an email! (kb353).  I hope to see many of you at the events this coming weekend and throughout Nov/Dec.

Meeting Minutes 10-29

We held a GBM this past Thursday and below are the key highlights:

* We are doing a new fundraiser, Trick-or-treat for Change TODAY from 5-8 pm. If you signed up before 11 AM this morning you received an e-mail from Laura, who is heading the event. We are going to Rittenhouse square to ask for change donations …dressed as construction workers. It’s going to be a good time. If you still want to sign up feel free. Meeting at Mario the dragon at 4:45 today.

* Elections for board positions have been announced. At the next GBM we will hand out applications for the board positions - new members who are eager to make a difference are encouraged to apply - there are several open positions.

* Rake-a-thon is now upon us and dates for flyering/raking have been posted at: signup.duhabitat.org (paste into browser). We will need all the help we can get - if you can make multiple dates that would be great, bring friends too! I will post more details on our web site for those not familiar with the fundraiser.

* Something not mentioned at the meeting is that we are trying to “adopt” a family for Thanksgiving. I’m sure you’re all familiar - we basically put together a basket of food, with a gift card for the Turkey, and an organization will drop it off to a family in need. This is a great charity act that helps a family be able to celebrate the holidays. When I have more info of what we need, I will post to the web site and ask you guys to bring donations (food) to the next GBM if you can.

* Canning at the Phillies Game - we are going to try to go canning at the Phillies game Monday night - details are still being worked out. Again, updates to follow, hopefully tonight. This will be a great fundraiser if we can get it together though.

* We are in the process of computerizing the 2 designs that were received for the Habi-hoodie contest - hopefully we can reveal those at the next meeting.

First Meeting Minutes!

Greetings everyone!

Habitat for Humanity had its first meeting of the quarter this past Thursday. Welcome to all our new members, it was great to see so many new faces!

Next General Body Meeting: If you missed the meeting, don’t worry! We will be holding another General Body Meeting (GBM) next Thursday, October 15th at 9pm in GSDC Conference Room D (basement of Creese Student Center), but I’ll also outline some important upcoming events in this email. Our next GBM will hopefully feature an actual Habitat Homeowner, so be sure to come out!

Fundraising: This term we will be canning (collecting money from pedestrians) almost every other week. The first canning date is this Friday, October 9th from 4-6 pm at 30th St. Station. This is a great opportunity to fulfill your volunteer requirement for the chapter as well as for the university. If you are interested in participating in canning make sure you sign up on the website at http://signup.duhabitat.org.

Builds: Our first build for the school year will be this Saturday from approximately 7am-4pm. In order to be eligible for a build, you must have attended one fundraising or volunteer event — canning counts! If you have a car, and are willing to drive, it would be greatly appreciated! If you are interested in attending the build sign up on the website at http://signup.duhabitat.org; more information and directions will be provided to those who sign up.

Hoodies: We have also decided to hold a competition for the design of our 2009 Habi-Hoodie’s! The winner will get a free hoodie with their design on it! Designs must use only a single color ink and must include our name or chapter logo. Submissions are due by our next meeting, Thursday October 15th, in any form.

Executive Board Meeting: An executive board meeting will be held tonight, October 8th at 9pm in our office 3014 McAlister. Board meetings are open to any student, but are generally smaller than General Body Meetings, and are more focused on running the organization. If you’re not sure if you want to attend, I’d suggest waiting to come to the following week’s GBM.

Future Events: More information will be coming soon regarding November’s annual fundraiser, “Rake-A-Thon” and open board positions for the 2010 Executive Board.

Have a great week!
