Drexel University Habitat for Humanity

We went to Salem today to help out at a Habitat house. We were laying cinder blocks to help create a wall that will eventually be part of the basement and it’ll be the support for the front porch. It was a great experience, we learned how to make the cement that is used to hold the cinder blocks in place and by the end we had become pretty good at laying the cinder blocks. We were also cleaning the floor of the home. Here are some pictures of us at work.

“On Saturday the Drexel Habitat group came down and spent the day continuing to lay block and mix mortar. They were quick learners and worked very well as a team, much conversation and comradery was evident as the front supporting wall was laid down with excellent height control, using the transit and string line as if they were old hat for them.”

We have another build day on May 30th, in Salem. The sign-up can be found at signup.duhabitat.org. We will be leaving Drexel around 7:45 and returning by 3 pm. Please keep in mind the need to do an event prior to the build (for new members) but the upcoming canning or Downtown Party will work :-)  Logistical details will be emailed at a later date.  Space is limited to 10-12 students.

Drexel Habitat will be hosting a Downtown Party (cooler, more fun name to follow) with UPenn and Temple at Sakeya (1420 Locust St) on April 30th from 10 pm to about 2 am. There will be an awesome DJ and of course all proceeds go directly to Habitat for Humanity. 18 to enter/21 to drink. There will be some $3 drink specials, so tell your friends and plan for a fun Thursday night! Tickets will be sold in advance for $8 and at the door for $10. More details to follow closer to the actual date.

We have a build in Salem County this Saturday, April 18th. If you are interested in coming on this build and you are able to drive please contact me asap at kb353@drexel.edu. A signup will be created momentarily at signup.duhabitat.org.   A max of 7 people can come, so it will be on a first come, first serve basis, though we do need 1-2 drivers.   Feel free to email with any questions.  Logistical details to follow, though plan to meet around 7:30-8am on Drexel’s campus, and arrive back around 3pm.

Along with the Thursday canning event on April 9 we will be taking a second group canning the next day, Friday April 10.  The time will be from 4-6 pm and the location will be at the Comcast center.
 
If you cannot make the Thursday canning event and can make the Friday one, please sign up at signup.duhabitat.org. The event name is entitled Canning (Friday).  If you do not sign up we may leave without you. :-(.
 
Please wear your green Habitat shirts or habitat hoodies and meet in the Habitat office Macalister 3014 prior to the event.

The first canning event for the spring term will be on  Thursday, April 9 from 4:00 pm -6:00 pm at 30th St. Station.  We will meet at the Habitat office on the third floor of Macalister room 3014 before going to 30th St Station. 
 
Please wear your Green Habitat shirts and if you have them the green Habihoodies.  If you have not participated in a Habitat event, a green Habitat for Humanity t-shirt will be given to you when you arrive at the office. 
 
Also, signup for the event on the website ( signup.duhabitat.org )  so that we can get head count on how many people will be partaking in the event.

Welcome back ASB group!! Congratulations on all your hard work and we hope you had a wonderful experience!

Although this was a couple of months ago we would just like to say thank you to everyone that came out and helped make HabiJam possible! We sold 110 tickets and made a profit by the end of the night. Although the night went well certain aspects could have gone better. We want to hear from you! If you attended HabiJam or if you were involved in the production process please email us with suggestions for next year!

            Build a House, Build a Dream is tomorrow Saturday April 4^th! If anyone wants to come out and help we need volunteers from 7am-2pm on Saturday. If you can only come for a portion of the time that is fine! If you’re interested please respond to this email ASAP so we can get a head count on how many volunteers to expect!

            Upcoming canning dates and locations will be posted on the website! We will also send an email with a list of days and locations. Keep checking the website for updates!

Our next Executive Board meeting is next Thursday at 6 pm in the Habitat office on the third floor MacAlister. Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting!

This past weeks executive board meeting was very exciting! Things are getting off the ground. Habijam is just around the corner! We have created an event on facebook, if you haven’t RSVP’d, please do so. Invite your friend’s! It’s going to be an amazing night! Tomorrow, 2/23/09, we are going to go chalking around campus to promote the event. Anyone who would like to help out is welcome. We will all meet up in the Habitat office, 3^rd floor MacAlister, at 7 pm. Your welcome to bring camera’s and there will be pizza after we are done (around 9 pm)!

Build a House, Build a Dream is on April 4th, 2009. Drexel will be hosting this event on campus once again! More details on volunteering for that event when we get closer to the date!
